The Mechanic Arms, 36 Drum Street, Gilmerton, Edinburgh

The Mechanic Arms is an early 19th century, two-storey, three-bay building that now serves as a public house. It has a single-storey, two-bay cottage attached at the rear and a modern flat-roofed addition on the north gable. The exterior is rendered and features raised and painted ashlar margins.

On the east elevation facing Drum Street, there is a central doorway with a modern door and a strip fanlight above. Flanking the doorway are ground floor windows, all of which have modern security grilles. The first floor has three windows with plate glass sashes that include adhesive astragals. The modern addition features two windows facing the street.

The south gable has a window at ground floor level. The roof is covered with grey slates, and the building has ashlar coped skews and broad ashlar coped, harled stacks.

The single-storey, two-bay cottage at the rear, which faces Ravenscroft Street, has a door on the left with a strip fanlight above and a window on the right. It is topped with red pantiles and has a slate easing course at the eaves, along with a harled end stack.
