Gilmerton Parish Church And Gatepiers, 6 Ravenscroft Street, Gilmerton, Edinburgh

Gilmerton Parish Church, located at 6 Ravenscroft Street in Gilmerton, Edinburgh, was built in 1837, with transepts, a porch, and gatepiers added in 1882 by John G Adams. This small, simple Romanesque church features squared and coursed cream sandstone with polished ashlar dressings on the east gable, while the sides and rear are constructed from squared and snecked rubble with stugged ashlar dressings. The exterior is stonecleaned and includes a base course, cill course, eaves course, and corner buttresses with steep batters. The church has round-arched window and door openings, a grey slate roof, and an ashlar-coped stack at the rear.

On the southeast elevation, the gable faces the road and is buttressed at the corners. A later low central gabled porch with a finial interrupts the original Venetian window. The round-headed doorway features a roll-moulded surround and string-mould, with double timber boarded doors that have large ornamental cast-iron hinges. There is a small window on each return of the porch. The Venetian window in the gable has colonnettes and simple tracery in the centre light. An ashlar belfry projects from the gablehead, open with round-arched openings supported by engaged colonnettes, a corbelled cornice, and a conical stone roof topped with a finial.

The northeast and southwest elevations each have a single tall window in the outer bay, with later 3-bay lean-to transepts adjoining. Each transept has a central door flanked by windows and a window on each return. The northwest elevation is harled and features a round window in the gable, along with a single-storey vestry adjoining at ground floor.

The interior was remodelled in 1882, featuring large basket-arched openings to each transept supported by beams. It includes natural timber pews and high table furniture, a boarded timber dado, and a simple compartmentalised ceiling. The pulpit dates from 1893, and the organ was installed in 1962. Stained glass depicting Bible stories is present in the Venetian window, gifted by the Anderson family of Moredun in 1887, along with an Anderson memorial plaque in the southwest aisle. Additional stained glass can be found in the Torrence window (northwest return of the southwest transept) and a rose window in an arched recess on the northwest gable.

The boundary walls and gatepiers consist of two pairs of ashlar gatepiers, likely from 1883, topped with gablet caps and linked by low rubble quadrant walls with pyramidal coping that support railings. The sides feature random rubble walls with rubble coping.
