5-6 Great Michael Close, Newhaven, Edinburgh

5-6 Great Michael Close is a mid to later 18th century, three-storey, four-bay tenement that forms the end of a terrace. It has a rectangular plan with a gable end facing Pier Place. The building is harled and limewashed, featuring raised and painted concrete surrounds around the openings. There are exterior stairs with timber railings leading to the first floor of No 5.

On the west elevation facing Great Michael Close, there are two two-leaf timber panelled doors at ground level, with the right door leading to No 6 and the left door blocked. Single windows are located in the outer left and right bays. The exterior stairs lead to the first floor, where there are two more two-leaf timber panelled doors (the right door leads to No 5 and the left door is blocked) along with flanking single windows. The second floor is regularly fenestrated, with a narrow window in the penultimate bay on the right.

On the north elevation facing Pier Place, there are single windows on all floors in the centre and outer left bays, while the right bay is blank. The ground floor of No 6 features 12-pane timber sash and case windows, while the remaining floors have 12-pane uPVC replacement sash and case windows. The roof is machine-made red pantiled with raised skews, and there are harled and coped gablehead stacks on the north and south sides with circular cans. A rooflight is situated at the centre.
