1 Great Michael Close, Newhaven, Edinburgh

This building at 2 Great Michael Close in Newhaven, Edinburgh, dates from the mid to later 18th century and was recast and converted by Ian Lindsay & Partners around 1970. It is a two-storey, three-bay pair of cottages located at the end of the close, with elevations facing Main Street and Great Michael Close. The exterior is harled and limewashed, featuring raised and painted concrete surrounds around the openings, and exterior stairs leading to the first floor with iron railings. There is a pend from Main Street in the outer left bay, with the entry to No 1 set within the eastern wall.

On the south elevation facing Main Street, there are two-leaf timber boarded doors at ground level in the two central bays. To the outer right, there is a single window, with a blank bay above it and a small window in the left bay. The pend opening is in the outer left bay, with the entry to No 1 to the right. The first floor has single windows in the remaining bays. The north elevation at the rear features a single window above the pend in the single bay to the right.

The west elevation facing Great Michael Close has a step leading to a two-leaf boarded timber door set within a projecting forestair wall (No 2), with a single window to the left and in the outer left bay. The stairs to the first floor lead to a boarded timber door in the central bay, flanked by single windows. Both elevations have 12-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate and has raised skews. The wallhead stacks to the east, south, and north are coped, harled, and limewashed, with circular cans.
