Description
5 Peacock Court in Newhaven, Edinburgh, is a two-storey, three-bay tenement building dating from around 1860, which was recast and converted around 1970. It has an L-shaped plan and faces Pier Place and Peacock Court. The entrance elevation, which was originally at the back, is harled and limewashed, featuring raised and painted cement surrounds around the openings. The walls facing Pier Place and Peacock Court are made of squared and snecked stugged rubble sandstone, with the ground floor rendered and whitewashed. The building has stugged long and short quoins, raised and painted surrounds to the openings, and a consoled doorpiece at the original entrance, which is now blocked.
On the west (entrance) elevation, the layout is asymmetrical with single openings. The timber door is offset to the left of the center, with a single window in the outer right bay on the ground floor and another above it. There are single windows on the first floor in the central and outer left bays.
The north (Pier Place) elevation is two-storey and two-bay, with a symmetrical arrangement of windows. Each floor has a single window in the right bay and bipartite windows in the left bay.
The south (rear) elevation features a single window at the re-entrant angle. It has a roll-moulded pilastered doorpiece in the outer right bay, flanked by consoles and topped with a projecting cornice, along with a single window to the left. A continuous cornice separates the ground and first floors, with a single window in the outer right bay and single windows in both floors of the recessed wing. The projecting bay has a blank facade.
The east (side) elevation is two-storey and three-bay, with single windows in the ground floor of the central and left bays and a regularly fenestrated first floor. The building has 12-pane uPVC windows on the ground floor facing Pier Place and Peacock Court, while the remaining openings feature 12-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is piended with grey slate in diminishing courses, and there are stepped rubble wallhead stacks on the east and west sides, each with projecting cornices and octagonal cans.
