8 Main Street, Newhaven, Edinburgh

8 Main Street in Newhaven, Edinburgh, is an early 19th-century building that was converted by Ian Lindsay & Partners around 1970. It is a two-storey, three-bay house with a shop on the ground floor facing Main Street. The exterior is made of squared and snecked rubble sandstone, featuring stugged long and short surrounds around the openings and long and short rubble quoins. The window surrounds are painted, with projecting cills and external timber shutters on the ground floor windows. The rear and side elevations are constructed of random rubble, with droved surrounds to the openings. An exterior stair with iron railings leads to the first floor.

On the south elevation, the entrance is located in the central bay, flanked by single windows that have timber shutters on the outside jambs. The first floor is regularly fenestrated. The north (rear) elevation features a stair leading to an entry at the first floor, a flat-roofed boarded timber porch, and single windows in bays on the outer left and right. There is a blinded single window on the ground floor in the outer left bay.

The ground floor has replacement 12-pane timber casement windows on the south elevation, while the first floor and all openings on the rear have 12-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate in diminishing courses, and there are stone skews. The apex stacks on the east and west have coped tops with circular cans.

Inside, the ground floor has been extensively altered to accommodate a general store.
