Description
22 Main Street in Newhaven, Edinburgh, is an earlier 19th-century, two-storey, two-bay house that has been recast by Ian Lindsay & Partners around 1970. The house is part of a terrace and has an asymmetrical design. It features repointed coursed yellow sandstone rubble with droved dressings, painted surrounds to the openings, and projecting cills. There is a harled and limewashed forestair with timber railings leading to the first floor.
On the south elevation facing Main Street, there is a stair to the left of centre that provides access to the first-floor entry. The entrance has a timber door with a rectangular three-light fanlight above it. There is a small opening in the outer left bay and a single window in the outer right bay. To the right of the forestair, there are two single windows at ground level, and a timber boarded door is set within the re-entrant angle of the forestair.
The north elevation facing Great Michael Square has a symmetrical arrangement with a doorway in the bay to the left of centre and a single window to the right. The first floor is regularly fenestrated, and there is a Velux rooflight present.
Both elevations feature 12-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate and has raised stone skews. There is a precast concrete coped stone apex stack to the east and a harled and limewashed wallhead stack to the west, both with circular cans.
