36, 38, 40, 42 Grindlay Street, Edinburgh

36, 38, 40, and 42 Grindlay Street is a four-storey, six-bay tenement building designed by Charles George Hood Kinnear in 1866, with later alterations. The building features polished ashlar stonework. It has moulded cill courses on the first, second, and third floors, with the cill on the first floor projecting broadly. The eaves cornice is mutuled. The windows are set in moulded architraves, with segmental-arched windows on the first floor and tripartite windows in the outer bays on the first and second floors. The second floor has consoled cills and bracketed cornices topped with segmental pediments. At the centre, there is a timber panelled door with a basket-arched plate glass fanlight leading to the flats at No 36. The ground floor has been much altered and includes restaurants.
