Description

20-26 Grindlay Street in Edinburgh is a four-storey, six-bay tenement block designed by Charles George Hood Kinnear in 1866. The building features a pedimented pend on the outer left and shops on the ground floor. The exterior is finished in polished ashlar, which is painted at the ground level. There is a continuous cornice above the shops, a cill course at the first and third floors, and a broad moulded eaves cornice.

The ground floor has roll-moulded basket-arched openings with stop-chamfered details. The central entrance to the flats has a timber boarded door with a plate glass fanlight. The first floor has segmental windows, while the second floor features round-arched windows, both set in lugged architraves. The third floor has shouldered windows, and bipartite windows are present on each floor except for the second bay from the left, with bracketed cills on the second floor.

The slightly advanced pend on the outer left has long and short quoins and channelled pilaster strips flanking the entrance. Above, there are tripartite windows and a corniced wallhead stack above the moulded pediment.

At the rear of the tenements, there is a Drill Hall that was constructed for the Midlothian Artillery Regiment, which is now in use as a restaurant as of 2015.
