Description
176, 178, 180 Morrison Street is a classical tenement block built around 1850. It stands three stories above a basement and features a symmetrical design with nine bays. The building is constructed of droved cream sandstone ashlar at the basement level, with polished sandstone ashlar above. It has a base course, a band course between the principal and first floors, a cill course to the second floor, and an eaves cornice with a blocking course. The entrance is accessed via ashlar steps and entrance platts that oversail the basement.
On the south elevation, the bays are arranged in a 4-1-4 grouping. The basement features modern part-glazed doors with three-pane rectangular fanlights in the central bays and the third bays from the left and right. The ground floor has a timber panelled door with a marginal glazed rectangular fanlight in the corresponding bays, while the remainder of the elevation has regular fenestration.
The east elevation is made of coursed rubble with polished sandstone ashlar quoins. The west elevation is obscured by an adjoining building, and the north elevation was not visible in 2000. The building has 12-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate piended roof with a lead ridge, and central paired, coped brick stacks. The cast-iron rainwater goods add to the overall character.
Additionally, there are spear-headed iron railings along the street and plain railings at the entrance platts.
