Description
4 Grove Street in Edinburgh is a pair of terraced townhouses built in 1822, with later alterations. The buildings are two stories high with an attic and feature a six-bay mirrored design. The ground floor has V-jointed polished sandstone ashlar rustication, while a polished sandstone ashlar band course separates the ground and first floors. The first floor is finished with droved sandstone ashlar, and there are various courses including a base course, a band course between the ground and first floors, a cill course at the first floor, and a cornice with a blocking course at the eaves.
On the principal elevation, No. 6 (to the left) has a deep-set two-leaf timber panelled door with a three-pane rectangular fanlight in the ground floor bay to the right, along with windows in each bay of all floors to the left. No. 4 (to the right) features a deep-set timber panelled door with an umbrella-patterned fanlight in the ground floor bay to the left, and windows in each bay of all floors to the right, with a non-aligned box dormer above.
The north and south elevations are obscured by adjoining buildings, and the west elevation was not seen in 2000. The houses have 12-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate piended roof, a slate-hung dormer, and irregularly placed rooflights on the east pitch. The south side has a coped skew, while the south elevation features a coped mutual ashlar multi-flue ridge stack and a rubble multi-flue apex stack on the north. There are cast-iron rainwater goods.
The interiors were not seen in 2000. The property has a dwarf wall with an ashlar cope, topped with replacement railings along the street.
