Description

12 and 12A Grove Street is a terraced town house built in 1822, with later alterations. It has two storeys over a basement and features an asymmetrical three-bay design. The building is constructed of painted droved sandstone ashlar at the basement, polished V-jointed ashlar rustication at the ground floor, and droved ashlar at the first floor. There is a polished band course between the floors, a cill course at the first floor, and a cornice with a blocking course at the eaves. The entrance includes ashlar steps and an entrance platt that oversails the basement.

On the principal elevation, there is a replacement timber door with a letterbox fanlight, which is offset to the right of centre at the basement level. A small window is located to the right of this door, while a window is situated in the bay to the left. At the ground floor in the bay to the right, there is a deep-set timber panelled door with an umbrella-patterned fanlight, and a window is present in the remaining bays at both the ground and first floors above.

The north and south elevations are obscured by adjoining buildings, and the west elevation was not visible in 2000. The first floor features 12-pane timber sash and case windows, while the ground floor and basement have replacement 2-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate and includes a single roof light on the east pitch. There is a coped skew to the north and a coped, repaired ashlar multi-flue stack with moulded cylindrical cans to the north as well. The building has cast-iron rainwater goods.

The interiors were not seen in 2000. Additionally, there are cast-iron railings with fleur-de-lys finials on the ashlar cope to the street, and the railings leading up the steps to the door are plain.
