Description

92 Restalrig Road in Edinburgh is a two-storey, five-bay symmetrical house designed by James Simpson in 1885. The house features a slightly advanced central three bays with two wings projecting to the southwest. It is constructed from droved ashlar sandstone with polished ashlar dressings on the front, while the sides and rear are made of coursed squared rubble. The building includes a base course, eaves cornice, and blocking course, with raised quoins on the central bays.

The northeast elevation is symmetrical, with the entrance door located in the central bay. This door is panelled and topped with a two-pane rectangular fanlight. The doorway has an architrave with a consoled cornice and a blocking course above, which extends over two flanking four-light mullioned rectangular projecting windows. The first floor features three regular central openings, while the outer bays have bipartite windows, with round-headed windows at the ground floor framed by Italianate timber surrounds that include three colonnette mullions and a blind oculus above.

The southwest, northwest, and southeast elevations were not seen in 1995. The three central first-floor openings have four-pane timber sash and case windows, while the remaining windows are plate glass timber sash and case. The roof is covered with grey slate and has a piended design. The house has droved ashlar seven-flue chimney stacks with a cornice, a louvred ventilation shaft over the north wing, and cast-iron downpipes.

The interior was not seen in 1995. The boundary wall consists of a rendered dwarf wall with ashlar coping along the street, topped with modern railings.
