Description
89 Restalrig Road is a double villa built around 1863. It features a 2-storey, 6-bay main block with irregular wings, including a raised 3-storey, single bay tower at the northern corner of No 87. The front and the left bay of the southeast elevation are made of polished ashlar sandstone, while the sides and rear are constructed from coursed and squared rubble. The villa has a base course, a cill course for the first-floor windows, a blocking course, and an eaves cornice.
The southwest (principal) elevation is symmetrical, showcasing round-arched doorways in the outer bays, which are adorned with a cornice and carved brackets. Above the door to No 89 is a sculpture of a greyhound. The entrance features panelled doors with semi-circular plate glass fanlights and is regularly fenestrated. To the right is a single-storey, single bay wing that is set back, while to the left is the 3-storey tower, which has two small openings at the ground floor and a single central window on the first and second floors. A modern rendered single-storey extension connects the tower to an outer left garage building, which has a modern door.
The northeast elevation is also symmetrical, with a 4-bay main block. It has round-arched stair windows in the outer bays and four regular windows in the second and third bays. The tower features a central window on the ground floor and a narrow window to the left of centre on the first floor.
The villa has plate glass timber sash and case windows at the front, 4-pane timber sash and case windows for the central window at the rear, and painted multi-pane round-arched windows in the outer bays. The roof is covered with grey slate, featuring a piended design for the main block and tower, and a half-piended roof for the right wing. Corniced ashlar stacks are present, along with cast-iron guttering and downpipes at the rear.
The interior was not seen in 1995.
The property includes gatepiers, boundary walls, and a lamp standard. There are two vehicular gateways on Restalrig Road and Prospect Bank Road, marked by square-section, droved ashlar gatepiers with base and corniced pyramidal caps. A rubble dwarf wall with ashlar coping is located at the front, along with a rubble garden wall featuring gablet ashlar coping. A surviving cast-iron lamp standard is situated at the centre of the dwarf wall, and there are modern railings present.
