Description
7-8 Maritime Street in Leith, Edinburgh, is a four-storey and basement warehouse designed by James Simpson and dated 1893. The building features a cream sandstone façade with a polished ashlar ground floor and squared, snecked stugged rubble above, complemented by polished dressings. The rear and side elevations also have stugged dressings. Architectural details include a base course, a band course above the ground floor, an eaves cornice, ashlar mullions, and barred windows throughout.
On the front elevation, there are corniced shouldered-arched pends with roll-moulded reveals at the slightly advanced outer bays. Above these, bipartite windows are found, with the first-floor windows featuring pediments and the second-floor windows having corniced architraves in recessed panels. The remaining bays have single windows. A prominent pedimented heraldic panel is located at the center of the first floor, showcasing a carved date, a ram's head, a crown, grapes, and the motto "j'avance." Short wallhead stacks are positioned at the corners.
The rear elevation has single windows in each bay and on each floor. The southwest elevation features a truncated gable with a wallhead stack to the right and a small addition behind it, along with three single windows.
The building is fitted with barred four-pane timber sash and case windows and has a slate roof with three wallhead stacks. Corbelled skewputts and moulded gutterheads add to the architectural detailing. The interior was not seen during the last inspection in 1993.
