Warehouse, 42 Maritime Street, Edinburgh

This building is a warehouse designed by James Simpson in 1892. It is four storeys high with a six-bay facade and features a later brick mansard fifth storey, although the rear portion has been demolished. The exterior is constructed from cream sandstone squared and snecked rubble, with pink ashlar dressings on the front, while the rear elevation is rendered.

On the front elevation, the ground floor is divided by shallow pilasters that support a frieze, with a band course above it. There are band cill courses at the first, second, and third floors, along with ashlar mullions. The first and third bays contain rectangular pend entrances, with paired doorways in the outer right bay and single windows in the remaining bays. The upper floors feature bipartite windows, and there is a recessed mansard attic.

The rear elevation is L-shaped due to the demolition of the rear portion of the warehouse, and it has modern rendering and windows. The ground floor is supported by hollow paired cast-iron columns that hold cast-iron girders. The northeast elevation has a modern brick mansard attic and modern windows. The front features four-pane timber sash and case windows, while the rear and side have modern replacements.
