Description

This is a two-storey, thirteen-bay office and warehouse block built in 1892, designed by James Simpson. Constructed in Edinburgh's Leith, it showcases Renaissance details and a distinctive domed corner feature. The front elevation is faced with polished cream sandstone, while the rear is rendered.

The building's architecture is characterized by a base course, channelled stonework on the ground floor, a corbel course above, and an impost string course at both ground and first floor levels. A bracketted eaves cornice with a blocking course runs along the top. The ground floor windows are round-arched with panelled aprons, while the first-floor windows are stilted segmental-arched with moulded heads, separated by pilasters. Roll-moulded doorways are present throughout.

The chamfered corner bay on the southwest (front) elevation features Venetian windows with a moulded apron at ground level, highlighted by a Bacchus head as the keystone. Foliate carving including thistles and shields, marked "RS & Co Ltd, Estd. 1846," adorns the spandrels. A curved oriel sits above on the first floor, featuring a stepped tripartite design with carved grapes and vine leaves. A balustraded parapet tops the corner, leading to an octagonal turret with bull’s-eye windows and grape motifs, topped with an ogival finialled leaded cupola. A segmental-arched pend, with a matching oriel above, is centrally located. It includes a doorway with a semi-circular plate glass fanlight and a single window above. The outer left bay features a segmental-arched doorway with pedimented pilasters and a two-leaf panelled door, along with a matching oriel window above. Single windows are present in the remaining bays. Five dormers light the roof space.

The northeast (Maritime Lane) elevation is a four-bay section with single windows, using droved ashlar with cherry caulking. A four-storey, three-bay warehouse block is also present, built with ashlar on the ground floor and stugged rubble above, containing loading doors and a gable. This section has been converted for office use.

The northwest (rear) elevation shows a stair projection with tall transomed tripartite stair windows. Behind this is a three-storey warehouse, with a weather-boarded southwest elevation and a single-storey lean-to addition.

Original timber sash and case windows with plate glass glazing are found throughout, while the warehouse incorporates timber casements. A slate roof with coped mutual stacks completes the exterior.

The interior features an ornate design centered on a grape and vine theme. A tripartite inner door displays etched glass panels. The ground floor is open-plan, featuring fluted Corinthian columns, a compartmental ceiling with ornate cornices, timber partitions with etched glass panels, and an original safe with its door and fittings. A carved timber staircase leads to a stair hall, containing etched glass and a plaster ceiling in the style of the 17th century. A principal room on the first floor boasts a compartmental ceiling and an elaborate grape cornice. A smaller room is distinguished by an oval cupola and a coved ceiling decorated with plaster garlands, doves, and laurel wreaths.
