Description
Lamb's House is a merchant's house located at 19 Water Street in Leith, Edinburgh, likely dating from the early 17th century, with remodels in the 18th century. The building underwent restoration by Neil & Hurd between 1937 and 1939, and by Robert Hurd & Partners from 1959 to 1961. It features a three-storey and garret asymmetrical rectangular plan, with a modern lift tower added to the rear and a single-storey addition to the front from 1959 to 1961. The exterior is constructed of harled rubble with exposed dressings, showcasing rounded or chamfered arrises on the original windows and crowstepped gables.
On the southwest elevation facing Burgess Street, there are three asymmetrically gabled bays with apex stacks. The central bay has a slightly projecting stairtower, which is corbelled above the ground and first floors, flanked by single windows and a doorway at ground level. There is a corbelled angle window above to the left, and asymmetrically placed windows on the stairtower. A corbelled garret stair is located in the re-entrant angle to the right above the third floor, with a recessed lean-to gablet to the left. The bay to the right features a nepus gable with a larger opening at ground level and paired windows that are off-centre to the right on the first and second floors. The left bay has a half-gable, a modern addition at ground level, and paired windows on the first, second, and third floors, with a loading door to the left.
The southeast elevation facing Water Street is gabled with an apex stack and has single windows that are off-centre to the right, along with a corbelled angle window at the second floor to the right. The northeast rear elevation includes a large projecting lift tower that is off-centre to the right, with asymmetrically placed windows in the remaining bays and attic windows that break the eaves. The northwest elevation is gabled with an apex stack and features a single window at the third floor.
The house has modern windows with fixed leaded upper panes and wooden shutters, as well as some small-pane sash and case windows. The roof is covered with modern red interlocking tiles and features four apex stacks and corbelled skewputts.
Inside, there is a stone turnpike stair in the southwest stairtower, which includes two slop-sinks set in ogival recesses. The first and second floors have large fireplaces with stone surrounds, and the second floor features fireplaces with bolection-moulded stone surrounds.
