27-29 Grassmarket, Edinburgh

27-29 Grassmarket in Edinburgh is a four-storey, seven-bay tenement building constructed between 1859 and 1863 by George Fox. The ground floor features shops and a flat-arched pend in the center known as Porteous Pend. The building is made of droved ashlar with polished dressings, although the ground floor is painted. Architectural details include a base course, a continuous fascia and cornice at the ground floor, a cill band at the first floor, and a dividing band between the second and third floors, topped with an eaves cornice. The ground floor has stop-chamfered openings, while the upper floors feature raised architraves on the windows, bracketed cills on the second floor, and gabletted dormerheads with rectangular carved panels on the third floor windows. The original shop fronts include two-leaf timber panelled storm doors and recessed glazed inner doors. The windows are timber sash and case with 12-pane glazing, and the roof is covered with grey slates, featuring brick stacks with circular cans.
