Description
East Lodge and Gateway at the Royal Victoria Hospital on Craigleith Road, built in 1906 by Sydney Mitchell and Wilson, showcases an unusual Arts and Crafts style with an asymmetrical design. The lodge is situated above a tall Tudor arched stone entrance leading to the former hospital site. It features rubble stone walls complemented by smooth rounded ashlar quoins at the entrance and stone corbels that support angled timber brackets for the lodge above. To the left of the entrance, there is a single window above a carved stone panel. The lodge has slate-hung elevations and includes 11 section-mullioned, multipane windows, with a canted bay to the left facing the street. At the rear, there is a half-rounded stone stair tower with an entrance beneath the archway. The full-height timber gates are riveted and boarded, operating on a tall single hinge mechanism. Inside the archway, there is a timber boarded ceiling and overhangs.
The upper floor predominantly features 8-pane timber side-hung and mullioned casement windows. The roof is bellcast, covered with graded grey slates, and has an off-centre ridge stack. The entrance door to the archway is timber boarded, and there are cast-iron rainwater goods.
The interior has a simple floor plan and a plain decorative scheme. A stone spiral staircase leads to a bathroom at a half landing with a front-facing window. The upper floor includes a corridor at the rear and three rooms that span the main window at the front. The doors are 4-panel timber, and there are coiled detail window handles and brackets, along with some fitted cupboards from around 1950.
