Description

A F Balfour Paul, 1928. 2-storey and attic residential

block with house master's house incorporated, on rambling

plan, with Elizabethan details. Squared and snecked

sandstone with contrasting ashlar dressings. Base and

string courses. Moulded stone mullions and transoms and

moulded architrave. E (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: with doorway

to wing of master's house to right, in advanced gabled

bay; hoodmoulded door and bipartite window above; attic

window in gablehead in pointed arched panel; recessed at

centre; segmental arches to residential block, recessed

at centre; segmental arches and bipartites at 1st floor;

piend-roofed dormer breaking eaves above. Outer bays to left

containing open Hall; 4-centred tripartite hall-window

with hoodmould in gabled bay at centre; narrow windows to

flanks.

S ELEVATION: 4 wide bays of house master's house to left,

bay left of centre advanced and piend-roofed with paired

bipartite windows at ground and 1st floor and breaking

eaves in gabled attic dormer; recessed bay to right of

centre with eaves swept down, bipartite at ground and

stone jettied, mannered gabled oriel breaking eaves above;

"WF" monogram in gablehead; advanced gabled bay to right

with generous fenestration, canted bay at ground and narrow

window in gablehead; ornate stone finial. 4 recessed bays

to right with inner 2 gabled and breaking eaves in

wallhead; bipartites throughout, irregularly disposed and

pointed arch panel to inner bays, bearing carved bee panel

and 'Industrio' W ELEVATION: gabled bay to outer left

with advanced, set-off chimney breast at centre

featuring depressed arch doorway with forestair at

ground and pointed arch panel to attic; fire escape

addition. Piend-roofed boiler house with large louvred

ventilator at apex, projecting at centre, and adjoined to

full-height 5-bay projection of residential block with

canted corners and gablehead above centre bay. Further

gabled bay to outer right with advanced chimney breast.

Grey-green slates to piend and gable roofs. Sash and case

windows with small-pane glazing pattern; geometric lead-

paned window to canted bay of master's house. Piend-

roofed dormer windows. Moulded stacks.

Ashlar coped skews. Some gablet skewputts.

INTERIOR: galleried landing to Hall, with study rooms

leading off. Boarded dado to house master's drawing room;

4-centred stone chimneypiece. Dado height timber cubicle

divisions to dormitories.
