Kimmerghame House, Fettes College, Carrington Road, Edinburgh

Kimmerghame House, part of Fettes College, was designed by A F Balfour Paul and built in 1928. It is a two-storey and attic residential block, incorporating the house master's residence, built on a rambling plan with Elizabethan detailing. The exterior is constructed of squared and snecked sandstone with contrasting ashlar dressings, featuring base and string courses. Mullions and transoms are moulded, as is the architrave.

The east (principal) elevation has a doorway leading to the house master’s wing, situated within an advanced gabled bay. Above the doorway is a hoodmoulded door and a bipartite window. An attic window is set within a pointed arched panel in the gablehead. The central section is recessed, while segmental arches define the residential block. The first floor has bipartite windows, and a piend-roofed dormer breaks the eaves. The left-hand outer bays contain an open Hall, with a large, four-centred tripartite window under a hoodmould in a gabled bay at the centre; narrow windows flank it.

The south elevation features four bays of the house master's house to the left. A bay set back from the centre is piended, with paired bipartite windows at ground and first floor, with a gabled attic dormer breaking the eaves. A recessed bay to the right of centre has eaves swept downwards, a bipartite window at ground level, and a jettied, mannered gabled oriel breaking the eaves above. A "WF" monogram appears in the gablehead. An advanced gabled bay to the right contains generous fenestration, a canted bay at ground level, and a narrow window in the gablehead. An ornate stone finial tops the structure. Four recessed bays to the right have the inner two gabled, breaking the eaves in the wallhead, with bipartites throughout, arranged irregularly. Pointed arch panels in the inner bays display a carved bee panel and the word 'Industrio'.

The west elevation includes a gabled bay to the outer left, featuring an advanced, set-off chimney breast with a depressed arch doorway and forestair at ground level, and a pointed arch panel to the attic. A fire escape has been added. A piend-roofed boiler house has a large, louvred ventilator at its apex, projecting centrally, adjacent to a full-height, five-bay projection of the residential block, with canted corners. A gablehead sits above the centre bay. A further gabled bay to the outer right also has an advanced chimney breast.

The roofs are covered with grey-green slates to both piend and gable formations. Sash and case windows utilize a small-pane glazing pattern, with a geometric lead-paned window to the canted bay of the house master’s house. Piend-roofed dormer windows are present. Moulded stacks are a feature, along with ashlar coped skews and some gablet skewputts.

The interior includes a galleried landing to the Hall, with study rooms leading off. The house master's drawing room has a boarded dado and a four-centred stone chimneypiece. Dormitories are characterized by dado height timber cubicle divisions.
