Description

The Administration Block at the Royal Victoria Hospital, designed by Sydney Mitchell & Wilson in 1906, is a two-storey, five-bay traditional Scots building with a single-storey and attic wing that connects to an Italianate dining hall featuring a prominent campanile. The exterior is made of rendered masonry, with ashlar detailing around the doorpiece and wallhead window margins, while the dining hall is constructed from purple ashlar masonry.

The entrance elevation showcases an advanced central bay with a Baroque Ionic-pilastered doorpiece and a large armorial panel above it. There are gabled dormers on either side, each adorned with diamond insets at the gableheads. The south elevation features the Italianate dining hall on the left, which consists of seven bays, with five central bays glazed. The outer bays have recessed central sections that include niches and panel insets. The eaves are balustraded, and to the right of the hall stands a four-stage campanile, with the lower stages harled. The ground level has a round-arched opening, and above the string course is an ashlar bellcote with round-arched openings on each face and a swept roof above.

The building predominantly features multi-pane glazing in timber fixed light and sash and case windows, with a grey slate roof and red tile ridge.

The interior, partially observed in 2007, includes a fine board room with an ornate chimneypiece and a vaulted plaster ceiling, while the dining hall has been subdivided.
