Description
The South Lodge to Norris Castle is a gate lodge dating from about the 1920s, designed by an unknown architect. The lodge is constructed of cast stone, finished to imitate both quarry-faced natural stone and ashlar, with concrete lintels.
It is a two-storey building, three bays long and one bay wide, running north to south and parallel to the road leading into the landscaped park. The main, east-facing façade is symmetrical, with a central three-bay section that projects slightly as a crenelated square tower, rising above the main roof to an attic level containing a blind circular window. The ground floor has a round-headed arched doorway with a timber-panelled door and an overlight featuring Y-tracery. This is flanked by paired, pointed sash windows set within round-headed openings. The arches of the openings are of cast stone moulded to resemble ashlar, contrasting with the quarry-faced finish of the walls. The first floor has three pairs of squared-headed, horned sash windows, each with a concrete lintel, beneath a flat roof with a crenelated parapet.
The west elevation is of irregular design, with four bays on the ground floor; a square-headed doorway is flanked by two small, square, top-hung windows, and a larger square-headed fixed window. The first floor has two narrow, square-headed sash windows towards the south end of the wall. North and south elevations both include canted bay windows, with paired, pointed sash windows in round-headed openings on the ground floor, and square-headed sash windows on the first floor.
Inside, the main entrance leads to a small entrance hall, with a kitchen to the south and a lounge with a brick fireplace to the north. A straight staircase with a timber handrail rises from the lounge to the first floor, which contains two bedrooms and a bathroom. Sanitary ware installed in the bathroom in the later 20th century has been excluded from the list of features of special architectural or historic interest.
