Sports Union, University Of Edinburgh, 48 Pleasance, Edinburgh

The Sports Union at the University of Edinburgh, located at 48 Pleasance, is a three-storey and attic building designed by Henry F Kerr in 1893. This near-symmetrical, three-bay corner tenement showcases a bargeboarded Arts and Crafts style. The exterior features squared, snecked, and stugged sandstone with ashlar margins, while the rear is constructed from rubble. The gabled outer bays are accentuated by canted oriel bay windows on the first storey, and the upper storeys have advanced, corbelled sections that are harled, with half-timbering at the peaks.

On the west elevation facing The Pleasance, there is a central basket-arched doorpiece with a roll-moulded architrave, leading to a two-leaf timber-panelled door topped with a fanlight. Flanking this are wide, shallow-arched window openings with deep moulded chamfers, featuring three-light windows with timber transoms and mullions, along with some bipartite windows.

The upper storeys predominantly have four-pane over plate glass timber sash and case windows, while the ground floor includes multi-pane glazing. The roof is covered with grey slate and features corniced wallhead stacks, along with cast iron rainwater goods.

Inside, there is a timber balustraded stair, several five-panel timber doors, and simple decorative cornicework. An arch at the first-floor landing is supported by decorative corbels.
