Sports Union, University Of Edinburgh, 48A Pleasance, Edinburgh

The Sports Union at the University of Edinburgh is a former church built in 1858, with alterations made by Henry F Kerr in 1893 and further modifications since then. This asymmetrical, two-storey building features a rectangular plan and a gable front in the Gothic Revival style, along with a lower two-storey bay to the right. It is constructed from squared and snecked, droved sandstone with ashlar margins, and includes a base course and some hoodmoulding with stylized label stops.

The entrance is located on the west elevation facing The Pleasance, featuring a wide pointed-arch doorpiece set off-centre to the right. This doorpiece has a pair of timber entrance doors with a central stone mullion and a multi-pane fanlight above. There is a central five-light round-arched window adorned with curvilinear tracery, and to the left on the ground floor, there are two-light windows with stone transoms and mullions.

The building predominantly has fixed glazing with top hoppers and is topped with grey slates, featuring triangular skewputts at the skews.

Inside, as observed in 2007, the space has been converted into an examination hall. It includes timber doors, some of which have glass panels, and there is an internal door that connects to No 48, which is listed separately.
