Fishmarket, Newhaven Harbour, Edinburgh

The Fishmarket at Newhaven Harbour in Edinburgh was built in 1896 and underwent restoration and conversion into a retail outlet in 1993 and a Heritage Museum in 1994. This single-storey fishmarket measures 26 by 2 bays and is oriented north-south along Newhaven pier. It features a cast iron and steel-framed structure with timber boarded arcaded sides and squared and snecked red rubble sandstone ends. The building is adorned with polished red sandstone dressings, long and short quoins, and curvilinear block skewputts.

The south elevation, facing Pier Place, is symmetrical with a twin-gabled end. Each bay has a large elliptical arched window, surrounded by droved voussoirs and pedimented keystones. The windows feature timber transoms and mullions, with a small-paned glazing pattern.

The east and west side elevations each have 26 segmental-arched bays supported by cast-iron pilasters. The east elevation retains boarded sliding doors in each bay, while the west elevation incorporates plate glazing. Above each opening, there are vertically-glazed fanlights. A timber gablet at the 14th bay has a tapering finial and sculpted base, with an architraved oculus set in the apex and a clock face within the gable. A concrete base with a loading platform for carts extends from east to west, with steel beams overhead.

The north and south elevations feature multi-paned glazing, while the east elevation has plate glazing. The roof is covered with grey slate in an M shape, including long skylights on the inner faces. The original rainwater goods remain on the south side, although the ventilators have been removed.

Inside, the building has been converted for its new functions but retains original features. The southern section serves as a retail outlet, the center is a museum, and the northern part remains as a fishmarket. A central row of square cast-iron piers supports a steel beam and occasional light steel cross girders, with a steel Polonceau truss roof above.
