42 Main Street, Newhaven, Edinburgh

42 Main Street is a mid to later 18th century cottage that has been recast and converted by Ian Lindsay & Partners around 1970. It is a two-storey, two-bay building that forms the end of a terrace, with its gable facing Pier Place. The exterior is harled and limewashed, featuring raised and painted concrete surrounds around the openings, and an exterior stair with timber railings leading to the first floor.

On the east elevation facing Great Michael Square, the stairs lead to a central entrance on the first floor, which has a two-leaf timber boarded door and flanking single windows. There is a single window on the ground floor in the stair recess to the left, along with a boarded storage door beneath the stair.

The west elevation facing Fishmarket Square has a recessed first floor and is regularly fenestrated on both floors. The north elevation facing Pier Place features a single window on the first floor in the outer left bay.

All elevations have 12-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is machine-made with red pantiles, a grey slate easing course, and precast concrete skews. There is a harled apex stack on the north side with a precast concrete cope and circular cans.
