Description

The War Memorial in Hermitage Park, Helensburgh, was designed by A N Paterson and completed in 1922. It is situated facing an ornamental rectangular pond within a walled garden that features ornamental gates.

The memorial has a cream sandstone ashlar construction, with a stepped base and a tall plinth topped by a domed rotunda that includes arcades. In every second bay of the rotunda, there are ashlar urns adorned with flaming torches. The dome itself is made of ashlar and is decorated with copper leaves.

Surrounding the memorial are rubble boundary walls, along with fine two-leaf cast-iron gates and railings that feature decorative elements such as wreaths, palm leaves, and thistle wreaths. The memorial was unveiled on 25 June 1992.
