Description
The War Memorial in The Square, Cullen, was designed by John Wittet from Elgin and constructed between 1919 and 1920. It is a squat octagonal monument set on a stepped base, made of polished ashlar. Each of the seven faces features recessed inscribed polished granite panels, which are framed by short angle pilasters. These pilasters are connected at the base and at the entablature by a continuous string course. Above this, the monument is surrounded by a mutuled cornice. The wallhead is defined by a moulded slate cornice that links pediments on alternate facets. The dome is topped with a simple finial, and there is a rear door that provides access to a small internal cell.
