Description
The Mercat Cross in The Square, Cullen, was originally built in 1675 and completed in 1695. It was first located near the Old Cullen church but was moved to Castle Hill around 1820, likely remodeled and overseen by William Robertson. In 1872, it was relocated to its current site and re-erected by architect John Miller.
The cross features an octagonal base made of polished ashlar, specifically Moray sandstone, with buttresses and crocketted pinnacles. It is topped by a slender octagonal shaft that culminates in a finial. The north face of the cross has a re-set cartouche, which is probably medieval, depicting the Virgin and Child. The structure was repaired around 1985.
