Description
The Clydesdale Bank, located at 2 and 4 The Square in Cullen, was built between 1866 and 1867 by James Matthews, following an earlier building on the site designed by William Robertson in 1823. This two-storey, L-shaped bank and dwelling features a four-bay front facing The Square and a single bay on Grant Street. The exterior is harled, with significant use of ashlar dressings and margins. The entrance to The Square is highlighted by a bracketed pediment, and there is an additional doorway in the re-entrant angle. All ground floor windows are adorned with bracketed cornices and panelled aprons, while the first-floor windows are connected by a cill course and corniced eaves bands, with blocking courses above. The building includes 2- and 4-pane glazing, and it has a corniced ridge and end stack slate roofs, which are bowed and piended at the angle.
