Description

Rockingham is a mid-19th century, two-storey, four-bay cottage villa located on Shore Road in Cove and Kilcreggan. The building features a rectangular plan and gabled design with Tudoresque details. It is constructed from whinstone and sandstone rubble, with harl-pointing, sandstone margins, and dressings. Notable architectural elements include a base course, quoin strips, advanced eaves, exposed rafters, and small finials.

The southwest (main) elevation presents a three-bay main villa with a lower gabled jamb on the outer left. There is a slightly advanced gabled block to the left, which has a full-height canted sandstone window with a bracketed cornice and a slate roof. To the right, there is a three-centre-arched door with a chamfered surround, hoodmould, and quatrefoils in the squinches, leading to a two-leaf, six-panelled door with a plate glass fanlight and a plaque above. A square dormer is positioned above this door. To the right at ground level is a window with a gabled dormerhead that breaks the eaves above. The lower gabled block to the outer left is slightly recessed and features a link block with a quadripartite trefoil-headed window, a gable with a window at ground level, and a round-headed window in the gablehead, all with hoodmoulds.

The windows are four-pane timber sash and case, and the roof is covered with grey slate and lead flashings. The chimney stacks are corniced and have sandstone copings with three grouped tall octagonal cans, the central one featuring interlacing detail.

The property includes a sandstone balustrade with steps at the center leading to the front lawn, featuring a pierced quatrefoil design with solid sandstone dies. Additionally, there is a boundary wall made of whinstone with harl-pointing, topped with ashlar saddleback coping, and square gate piers with stop-chamfered arrises, cornices, and graded pyramidal caps.
