Description
This is a cottage dating from around 1840, designed in an L-plan with a slightly later wing added to the northeast. It is a low, single-storey, gabled structure that once served as the factor's house for Portkil House. The exterior features grey cement render with ashlar margins and dressings, chamfered reveals, panelled ashlar aprons at the windows, and advanced bracketed eaves.
On the northwest (entrance) elevation, there is a broad three-bay gable on the outer right, with a lean-to boarded porch addition at the centre and flanking windows. To the left, the gabled wing is advanced and includes a tripartite window, with a window on the right return and a blank bay on the outer left.
The southeast (main) elevation presents a symmetrical three-bay block with a slightly recessed two-bay wing addition on the outer right. The advanced gabled centre bay breaks the eaves and features a window with a bracketed block canopy, flanked by additional windows. The right wing has two tripartite windows symmetrically arranged.
The interior has been modernised. The cottage has twelve-lying-pane sash and case windows, a grey slate roof with lead flashings, and tall sandstone ashlar ridge stacks with circular cans.
