Description
The Saw Mill in Kellas dates from the early 19th century and is a single-storey building with an attic and basement, situated on sloping ground. It has a long rectangular plan that includes a cottage with attached saw mill and joiner's workshops. The structure is made of pink and buff rubble sandstone, with parts harled and mostly whitewashed, topped with a roof of grey and purple slate and corrugated asbestos. The windows are primarily 4-pane sash and case, along with top-hopper styles, and there are end and ridge stacks featuring thackstanes.
On the east elevation, there is a 3-bay cottage on the left with a half-glazed door in the center, flanked by two slate-hung timber gable dormers and an attic window on the left return gable. To the far right, there are three bays with a boarded door in the center, a stone forestair leading to a boarded door at the basement on the right, and a piended roof. A single-storey lower wing is located to the right, featuring a window on the left and two doors on the right, also with an asbestos roof. There is a further bay that steps down at the outer right, which includes a door and a piended roof.
The west elevation shows three irregularly placed windows on the harled cottage at the right, with two windows on the left and a window on the left return gable. The stepped-down wing on the left has a window and a blocked window, along with a further low bay at the far left, both partially obscured by an advanced mono-pitch roofed addition.
