Description
The Smithy and House in Finavon dates from around 1760 and was extended in the early 19th century. It is a single-storey, 5-bay, L-plan cottage that also served as a blacksmith’s workshop with a forge. The building is constructed from roughly coursed sandstone rubble, featuring large ashlar dressings.
On the southwest elevation, there are bays to the left of the center that include a boarded timber door and flanking windows. To the right of the center, there is another window and a modern garage door set in the broad former workshop entrance on the outer right. The roof features four traditional small rooflights and a vertical-astragalled rooflight positioned close to the ridge at the right of the center.
The southeast elevation showcases a variety of elements, including a boarded timber door on the outer right and a window on the outer left, along with four traditional small rooflights and a vertical-astragalled rooflight near the ridge at the right of the center.
The northeast elevation presents a gabled structure with a small rubble-built lean-to outbuilding topped with a corrugated-iron roof. There is a low opening on the return to the left in the re-entrant angle.
On the northwest elevation, there is another gabled section with a lean-to outbuilding made of corrugated iron and a gablehead stack. The return to the left features a rubble lean-to with a corrugated-iron roof that abuts the eaves line, along with a tall stack beyond.
The windows include timber sash and case designs with 8- and 12-pane glazing patterns, as well as fixed timber windows with 9-pane and vertically-aligned 6-pane glazing patterns. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are coped brick stacks, including one at the gablehead with thackstanes.
