Description

Ashley Cottage, located at 23 Slug Road, is a cottage dating from around 1900, with later additions to the rear. This single-storey and attic building features three bays and retains exceptionally fine architectural details and interior elements. It is paired with No 25 Slug Road. The exterior is constructed of heavily stugged Aberdeen bond ashlar with tooled ashlar dressings, while the sides and rear are made of coursed, squared rubble, with harl and brick extensions. The building has base and eaves courses, stone mullions, and stop-chamfered arrises.

The principal southwest elevation is symmetrical, featuring a central bay with a broad nine-panelled timber door, flanked by pilasters and narrow outer lights, all beneath a dentilled cornice and a three-part fanlight. Above this, there is a small piended wallhead dormer window. The flanking bays each have a canted dormer window under a reducing slate roof, which meets the base of a smaller dormer with a polygonal roof.

On the northwest elevation, there is a broad gabled facade with a single window to the left and right of the center. The windows are fitted with UPVC sash and case effect glazing, and the roof is covered with grey slates. The gablehead stacks are coped with ashlar and feature a full complement of polygonal cans. The skews are ashlar-coped with mitre skewputts, and square-section cast-iron downpipes are adorned with decorative rainwater hoppers and fixings.

Inside, the cottage boasts a good decorative scheme that includes fine moulded plasterwork cornices and ceiling roses, picture rails, panelled timber reveals, and fire surrounds. The architraved and panelled timber doors lead to an encaustic-tiled hall floor and a screen door with patterned glass that opens into the stairhall. This area features decorative plasterwork consoles and a dog-leg staircase with decorative cast-iron balusters. The principal ground floor rooms are enhanced by paired round-arched alcoves and flanking fluted columns.

The property is enclosed by low coped harled boundary walls, which include an ironwork gate.
