Description

Rowandale, located at 25 Slug Road, is a cottage built around 1900, featuring a single storey and attic with three bays. It is notable for its fine architectural details and interior, and it is paired with No 23 Slug Road. The exterior is constructed of heavily stugged Aberdeen bond ashlar with tooled ashlar dressings, while the sides and rear are made of coursed, squared rubble. It includes base and eaves courses, stone mullions, and chamfered arrises, along with decorative cast-iron finials on the dormer windows.

The principal elevation is symmetrical, with the central bay containing a part-glazed nine-panelled timber door, flanked by pilasters and narrow outer lights, all beneath a dentilled cornice and a three-part fanlight inscribed with 'ROWANDALE'. Above this is a small piended wallhead dormer window. Each flanking bay features a canted dormer window under a reducing slate roof, which connects to a smaller dormer with a polygonal roof. To the outer left, there is a stepped ashlar garage with a vertically-boarded part-glazed timber door.

The southeast elevation presents a broad gabled front with single windows on either side of the center. The windows are timber sash and case with a four-pane glazing pattern. The roof is covered with grey slates, and the gablehead stacks are made of ashlar with coped tops and a full complement of polygonal cans. The ashlar-coped skews have mitre skewputts, and there are square-section cast-iron downpipes with decorative rainwater hoppers and fixings.

The interior was not seen in 2005, but it is noted to have a good decorative scheme, including an encaustic-tiled hall floor with a screen door. The property is also enclosed by low coped harled boundary walls with ironwork gates.
