Description

Kirk Cottage, located at 47 Slug Road in Stonehaven, is an earlier 19th-century building with an east wing added before 1867. It was subdivided in the mid-20th century. This single-storey and attic cottage features a rectangular plan with five bays arranged in a 3-2 grouping, situated on a corner site. A later north wing creates a V-plan and has been altered to form two separate cottages. The exterior is harled and whitewashed, with some areas having ashlar margins that are painted.

On the southwest elevation, which faces Slug Road, the bays on the left include a blocked central door with flanking windows, leading to a pedimented wide central tripartite dormer window above. To the right, there are two closely aligned windows with a similar dormer window above. A later porch is recessed at the outer right.

The northwest elevation, facing Bath Street, features two widely spaced windows in a gabled bay at the outer right. To the left, there is a lower bay with two small windows and later bays beyond that include a pedestrian door.

The windows on the southwest elevation have a 12-pane glazing pattern in timber sash and case style, with the central lights reglazed and plate glass used for the outer lights of the dormers. The roof is steeply pitched and covered with graded grey slates. It has coped ashlar stacks with thackstanes and cans, along with straight ashlar-coped skews.

Inside, the cottage boasts moulded cornices, working shutters, and deep skirtings. The rooms in the north wing at No. 27 feature two stone fireplaces with large lintels.

The property is enclosed by coped rubble boundary walls.
