Description
This is a mid-19th century pair of semi-detached houses, with an earlier addition, forming a short terrace at 46 Arduthie Road. They are built asymmetrically in four bays, with the bays grouped 1-3 facing Arduthie Road. The houses display group value due to their cohesive design and contribution to the streetscape.
The principal, southwest-facing elevation of 46 Arduthie Road is symmetrical and L-shaped. A tiled path leads to the center bay, which features a timber panelled door with a plate glass fanlight, sheltered by a consoled cornice. Canted windows flank the door, and slate-hung, polygonal-roofed canted windows are positioned above the outer bays. A small, pedimented dormer window sits centrally above. The southeast elevation is largely obscured by a modern garage. The rear, northeast-facing elevation has an asymmetrical arrangement of windows, including a projecting gabled bay in the center and single windows on either side. A canted dormer window is also present on the right.
Number 2 Princess Road presents a single bay with a canted window on the ground floor and a slate-hung, polygonal-roofed dormer above. Its northwest-facing elevation, which is the entrance to Princess Road, has a rubble gable, with a thistle-finialled, gabled bay featuring a four-panelled timber door, fanlight, and pilastered jambs. A lower bay to the left incorporates a single ground floor window and a wide bipartite attic window. The northeast-facing rear elevation has been altered.
The buildings are constructed primarily from dressed grey granite with finely finished margins, while roughly squared rubble is used elsewhere, with rendering on the northwest side and dry-dash on the northeast side. The windows are timber sash and case, predominantly with 4 panes per sash, and covered by graded grey slates with terracotta ridges. The chimneys have coped granite details and polygonal cans. Ashlar-coped skewputs with block skewputts are also present.
Low, saddleback-coped, rendered boundary walls, flanked by square, rendered gatepiers (pyramidally-capped to the southwest and flat-coped to the northwest), create the boundaries. The rear boundaries are of coped rubble.
The interior of number 46 showcases decorative plasterwork cornicing and ceiling roses, picture rails, and architraved timber panelled doors. The vestibule has an encaustic-tiled floor, a screen door with fanlight, and a hall featuring a consoled and keystoned segmental arch. A winding timber staircase with decorative cast-iron balusters rises within. The principal ground floor room includes arched alcoves flanking a slate fireplace with decoratively-tiled cheeks and a cast-iron grate; other fireplaces have horseshoe grates. The interior of number 2 also has moulded plasterwork cornices, working shutters, timber fire surrounds with tiled cheeks, and a winding staircase with decorative cast-iron balusters. A ground floor telephone room features a fluted architrave incorporating a door bell, a part-glazed panelled timber door, and a principal ground floor room with arched alcoves flanking a timber fire surround and a horseshoe grate.
