Description

Isla Bank, built in 1895, is a single-storey villa with an attic, featuring three bays and fine detailing. The entrance has a doorhead framed with ball finials, and the canted windows are adorned with corniced blocking courses. The dormer windows have dentilled cornices, and the pedimented dormer window displays decorative braced bargeboarding. The exterior is constructed from stugged, coursed, and squared rubble with stugged ashlar dressings that are two courses deep, while the sides and rear are finished with coursed snecked rubble. The building includes base and eaves courses, a roll-moulded doorway, stone mullions, raked cills, and chamfered arrises.

The principal elevation is symmetrical, featuring a central bay with steps leading up to a deep-set panelled timber door with a fanlight inscribed with 'ISLA BANK'. Flanking canted windows lead to canted dormers above, and a small pedimented wallhead dormer is located in the centre. The windows are timber sash and case, with 4-pane and plate glass glazing patterns. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are coped ashlar gablehead stacks with a full complement of polygonal cans, as well as ashlar-coped skews with moulded skewputts. Square-section cast-iron downpipes are fitted with decorative rainwater hoppers and fixings.

Inside, the villa features a good decorative scheme, including plain and decorative plasterwork cornices and ceiling roses, sideboard arches, and architraved panelled timber doors with reveals. The vestibule floor is decorated with encaustic tiles and leads to a screen door with multi-pane coloured leaded glazing, which opens into the stair hall. This hall features a keystoned and pilastered segmental arch and a timber dog-leg staircase with ball-finialled carved newel posts and turned balusters. The landing has a consoled round-arched opening.

The boundary walls and gatepiers consist of coped rubble walls with pyramidally-coped square-section ashlar gatepiers.
