Description
The former smithy located in Old Market Place, Banff, dates from 1793 and 1796, built on a site that has origins in the 17th century. It features two parallel, single-storey buildings with lofts, which were previously used as meal-houses or stores, facing north and adjacent to the pavement. There is also an early 20th-century addition in the form of a parallel gabled range to the east. The buildings are harled, with the earlier structures showcasing tooled ashlar margins. Each former meal store has a ground floor doorway and a round-headed loft entrance directly above. The western range includes a re-used apex bellcote. The roofs are finished with corrugated asbestos and corrugated iron, and there are apex stacks present.
