Description
The Smithy is a smithy building dating from 1780, which was remodelled in 1849 and repaired in 1979. It is constructed from coursed and squared freestone blocks featuring herringbone tooling, topped with a plain tile roof that has shaped tile bands, coped verges, and a ball finial on the left. The building has an ashlar ridge stack and integral end stacks. It is aligned north-east to south-west and consists of one storey and an attic, with a hollow chamfered eaves band.
The facade has four bays, including a two-leaf smithy door with a 20th-century cambered lintel and decorative strap hinges. There is a gabled break to the right of the centre, featuring a cambered arch door with an ogee moulded surround and an inserted datestone above inscribed "ABC/1979". In the attic, there is a two-light chamfer mullioned window with a rebated surround, and single-light ground floor windows on either side of the gabled break, both with chamfered surrounds. The 1962 provisional list noted two inscriptions over the doorway, "C.B. 1780" and "I.B. 1849", which have been removed and replaced by the current inscription.
