Description

Gavenwood is a two-storey house with a basement, built in 1859 and extended in 1872, serving as a factor's house for the Fife Estate. The building is constructed from squared and coursed whinstone, featuring contrasting cream sandstone ashlar dressings, including a base course, a cill course at the first floor, and an eaves course. The windows have stone mullions and are arranged in bipartite configurations.

On the west elevation, there is a central gabled bay that is advanced, featuring a round-arched doorway flanked by pilasters and a deep-set keystone. The door has a strip fanlight above it, and there is a window above on the first floor, along with windows on both the ground and first floors in the flanking bays. To the outer right, a one-bay wing is recessed, with a window on each floor.

The north elevation has three bays, with bipartite windows at the centre and full-height canted windows on either side. The south elevation features a gabled wing on the left, with a window on each floor and a blind quatrefoil at the gablehead. There are also windows on each floor of the return and a window in the basement.

At the rear, two wings project and are enclosed by high walls forming a service court. The building has sash and case windows, mostly with a four-pane glazing pattern, and some with lying-pane glazing on the north gable. The roof is covered with grey slates and has a piended design with overhanging eaves. Corniced ashlar stacks with divided flues and decorative cans are present.

The gatepiers to the west consist of a pair of square ashlar piers capped with pyramidal tops, although the gates are missing.
