Description

Banff Bridge, located over the River Deveron in Banff, was engineered by John Smeaton in 1779 and later widened in 1881 by engineer John Willet. This 7-span bridge features tooled rubble with ashlar dressings. It has dressed stone arched rings and rubble spandrels that include oculi. The original arches have a smaller radius compared to those added during the widening; both sets of arches are segmental, with the 1881 arches lined with brick. The bridge has a coped parapet with later lamp standards and cutwaters that rise to connect with the spandrels added in 1881. The approximate span of the arches varies, with the outer arches being slightly narrower than those in the center, ranging from approximately 16 meters to approximately 19 meters in width.
