Description

Mains of Melrose is an earlier 18th-century house that stands tall with two storeys and a dormerless attic. It features a three-bay design, with a continuous single bay addition from the 19th century at the west gable, creating an irregular four-bay frontage. The house is flanked by low two-storey blocks that are connected by curved mono-pitch quadrants to both the house and the front garden wall, forming a courtyard or garden area. The exterior is harled, with tooled and polished ashlar dressings and margins.

The main entrance is centrally located in a slightly advanced gabled bay, featuring round-headed moulded jambs with acanthus detailing on the keystone and imposts. There is a segmental-headed attic window in the gable that has similar detailing on the keystone. The glazing is modern, and there is a large modern sun parlour that fronts the house. The end stacks, which serve the original house, have deep roll moulded copes, and the roof is covered with slate.

Access to the garden is via steps leading to a central entrance, which is marked by a pair of simple square ashlar gatepiers topped with shallow pyramidal caps, along with a pair of cast-iron gates.
