Description

Manner Street Mill in Macduff is an early to mid-19th century former bone mill, which may include parts of an earlier mill and later served as a meal mill. The building consists of three and four-storey sections with an attic, arranged in an elongated L-shaped block that is angled at the northern end, overlooking a courtyard. It is constructed from rubble and now features dry-dash harling, with later slappings at the ground level.

The northern elevation faces Commercial Street and has a four-storey, four-bay block at its center, with slapping at the ground and a window on each floor. Above this, there is a large slate-hung ventilator. To the west, there is a lower three-storey range, while to the east, a two-storey, five-bay range extends southward, featuring four depressed arched windows on the first floor and a loading door at the center, with eaves that break for the attic.

On the southern elevation, the ranges are grouped around three sides of a courtyard. The central block is again four-storey and four-bay, with vehicle slapping at ground level and windows on each floor above. To the right, there is a three-storey addition with a cat-slide roof that adjoins a two-storey, five-bay range at right angles. To the left, a three-storey, five-bay range has steps leading to a door on the first floor and a round arched window to the right. This range extends with a three-bay addition that has a forestair leading to a first-floor doorway. Continuing at an angle, there is a four-bay addition with vehicle slappings at ground level and windows on each floor above. The building features boarded doors, sliding doors to the slappings, boarded windows, some with glazed upper panes, and wooden bipartites. The roofs are covered with grey slates, and there are ashlar coped skew stones and stacks.

Inside, the mill has cast-iron columns, some of which are paired, supporting each floor. An iron mesh kiln floor survives on the upper floor of the central block, but there is no machinery present.
