Description

27 Crook O' Ness Street and Yard in Macduff is a substantial warehouse built in the later 18th century. It stands three stories tall with a four-bay south elevation and a five-window rear facing West Skene Street. The building is constructed of harled rubble and features regular window arrangements on both the front and back.

The south elevation has blocked entrances in the second and third ground floor bays, along with small attic windows positioned close to the wallhead. The north elevation includes a central entrance with a loft floor door above, as well as wide entrances in the outer bays that are now closed off by modern sliding doors. Similar to the south elevation, there are loft windows near the wallhead. There is a single entrance on the first floor in the east gable, and upper floor gable windows are present in both the east and west gables. The first-floor windows have four-pane glazing, and most attic windows still have their shutters. The roof is slate.

Inside, the ceilings are supported by a central arcade of wooden columns, which are circular on the ground floor and square on the first floor, all featuring long wedge-type capitals.

The south elevation is complemented by a walled yard that has entrances to both Crook O' Ness Street and West Skene Street. There is also a later 19th-century office, likely a former two-horse stable, made of rubble with tooled rubble dressings. This structure has modern windows, a single end brick stack, and a slate roof.
