Warehouse, 17-18 John's Place, Edinburgh

This is a five-storey and attic corner warehouse built in 1862 by J Anderson Hamilton, with a three-storey wing at the rear. The exterior features cream sandstone, coursed and squared stugged rubble on the southeast and southwest sides, complemented by polished and droved ashlar dressings. The rear and wing are constructed from squared and snecked rubble. Notable architectural details include a base course, polished ashlar rusticated quoins, segmental-arched and keystoned barred windows with bracketed cills, and gableheads adorned with pronounced corbelled skewputts and triangular panels featuring carved motifs. The round-arched doorways are decorated with heavy rope-mouldings that step over carved Leith mottoes and knotted label stops.

On the southeast elevation facing John's Place, there are three bays with a broad doorway at the center and windows in each bay and on each floor, with the center bay featuring wider windows. The taller center gable has kneelers and a triangular date panel, flanked by smaller gableheads. The southwest elevation facing Wellington Place has seven bays, with windows in each bay and on each floor, and a broad doorway on the outer left. The center bay has a gable with kneelers, while smaller gableheads are present on the second and sixth bays. There are also two small gabled timber dormers.

The northwest rear elevation includes a three-storey later flat-roofed wing with segmental-arched openings and four broad doorways at the ground floor, which are now blocked. There is one rectangular doorway and a small slated addition to the roof, with windows in the main warehouse behind also blocked with rubble. This elevation features three small gabled timber dormers.

The warehouse has barred timber casement windows and a slate piended and platform roof, along with ornamental gutterheads. The interior has been largely remodelled with steel stanchions, and some floor levels were changed around the early 20th century.
