Description
Inverurie War Memorial and Gardens, built around 1921, is a war memorial dedicated to those who served in World War I and II, situated within a rectangular landscaped garden at the approach to the Town Hall. The memorial is a substantial, two-stage structure made of bull-faced granite, featuring a granite infantryman. The first stage has a three-stepped base with inset panels on the second step; the southern panel commemorates "THOSE WHO DIED IN THE SERVICE OF THEIR COUNTRY IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR 1939-45," while the other faces display a roll of honour. The second stage has a battered plinth with an inset southern panel inscribed "IN PROUD AND GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE MEN OF INVERURIE AND DISTRICT WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 - 1918," below a relief-carved laurel wreath with a crossed rifle and sword, with a roll of honour on the other faces. This stage culminates in a monumental kilted infantryman holding a rifle. The memorial is enclosed by decorative ironwork railings and features a two-leaf gate.
