Description
The War Memorial in The Square, Rhynie, was created by sculptor Robert Warrack Morrison in 1920. This tall, narrow memorial commemorates those who served in World War I and World War II and is set within a rectangular enclosure. It features a grey granite base and cornice, with a polished black granite pedestal in between. The stepped rectangular base includes a segmental World War II memorial that projects to the southeast. The pedestal is inscribed with a dedication that reads, "ERECTED IN MEMORY OF / THE MEN FROM THE / PARISHES OF RHYNIE AND KEARN / WHO SERVED THE CAUSE OF / FREEDOM & RIGHT IN THE / GREAT WAR 1914-1919 / AND IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF / THOSE NAMED HEREON WHO / FELL IN THE GREAT CONFLICT" followed by "THEIR NAMES LIVETH FOR EVERMORE." Atop the pedestal is a life-size granite figure of an infantryman with his head bowed, leaning on a rifle. The remaining elevations of the pedestal display a roll of honour. The enclosure is surrounded by low decorative cast-iron railings and a gate.
